George Van Hook invites you to a two-day spring workshop, where you will learn all aspects of portrait painting.
The workshop begins with an understanding of the structure of the head, and spending the morning DRAWING the head, either with charcoal and pencil, or with a brush. George works with each student to make sure that they understand the concepts that are needed. All work will be done from a live model. In the afternoon class moves to a limited palette of colors. Students spend the time doing one or two full studies of the head.
On day two George will start by reviewing the lessons from the first day, with additional information on painting clothing. All students will then have the time to complete a full head and shoulders, adding in additional colors to create a sense of the living person. George will provide individual instruction at this time. He will demonstrate how to deal effectively with the various features of the face. The final afternoon session will allow the students to attempt an actual fully realized portrait, and then we will leave plenty of time for a final wrap up and critique discussion.
Artists at any stage of their development are welcome. However, the participating artist should have an understanding of and be comfortable with oil paints.
Upon receiving your registration, a materials list, a daily schedule and recommendations for accommodations and restaurants will be sent to you via email.
Participants are responsible for their own art materials and their own meals and accommodations.
