George Van Hook invites you to a two-day spring workshop, where you will learn the composition & structure of the head & shoulders, painting clothing, laying out the pallet, proper use of materials and all other aspects of portrait painting.

The two day portrait workshop will begin on March 16. We will begin with an understanding of the structure of the head, and spend the morning DRAWING the head, either with charcoal and pencil, or with a brush, as the students desire. George will carefully work with each student to make sure that they understand the concepts that are needed. All work will be done from a live model. In the afternoon we will move to a limited palette of colors and will spend the time doing one or two full studies of the head.

On day two George will start by reviewing the lessons from the first day, with additional information on painting simple clothing. All students will then have the time to complete a full head and shoulders, and we will add in additional colors to create a sense of the living person. George will at this time continue to work with each individual student, as the problems that arise are often different for each student. He will demonstrate how to deal effectively with the various features of the face. The final afternoon session will allow the students to attempt an actual fully realized portrait, and then we will leave plenty of time for a final wrap up and critique discussion.

Artists at any stage of their development are welcome. However, the participating artist should have an understanding of and be comfortable with oil paints.

Upon receiving your registration, a materials list, a daily schedule and recommendations for accommodations and restaurants will be sent to you via email.

Participants are responsible for their own art materials and their own meals and accommodations.
